CHARITY EVENT

The Pre-Medical Society has collaborated a charity event with the Welfare and Charity Keen Youth Society (WACKY) and the American Degree Program (ADP) with the theme, ‘ In Aids of Little Hands’, which was in support of UNICEF and Agathian’s Home. This event was held from 7^th till 9^th of July 2010.A joint effort between the above mentioned, this event comprises of a 3-day campaign which includes the charity sales on the 7^th July and the conference on the 8^th July. The charity night concert with the theme, “Faire la Charite” was held on the 9^th July whereby all the proceeds of the ticket sales and drinks on that day was channeled to the Agathian Home. However, the sales of items throughout the campaign was provided to UNICEF. Besides fund-raising, the ultimate objective of our event would be to instill awareness amongst students towards the welfare of underprivileged children.

Furthermore, a ALL-WHITE day was proposed on the 8^th July, whereby all students and teachers were encouraged to wear white as to recognize and instill commitment in all individuals towards this event. To top that off, Vannessa Chong,

Malaysia

’s representative for Amazing Race Asia responded to our invitation by providing her insights and experiences in contributing towards charity through UNICEF. We strongly believe that through this, many were impacted and convicted through her short, but yet absolutely meaningful speech. “ Its never the amount that matters in charity, but a sincere heart that earnestly wish to make the world a better place”, were among the very few sentences that still keeps ringing in my head. With that, she had officially kick-started the event. Not forgetting, “The Honest Mistake” band gladly accepted our request by captivating the audience with their marvelous and lively songs. The captain of the band, Darren decided to have a sing-along performance for a closer fellowship with the audience.

The long awaited day has soon arrived. Due preparations were completed with co-operations from everyone, especially ADP and ECA who helped tremendously in setting up the tables, cleanliness, organizing the entire performance for the night and emcees. All in all, everything went smoothly and the orphans from the Agathian Home performed a heart-warming performance of breakdance! TOTALLY AMAZING!! Everyone were blown away and were spell-bound with their amazing talents!! It is hoped that through the fund-raising and necessary help provided, these orphans and the unfortunate children under the coverage of UNICEF would be blessed and be impacted in a way or another. On top of that, members from each society made a visit to the Agathian Orphanage Home approximately a week before the event with the intention of helping them with spring cleaning and providing the necessary. With close interactions with these children, it was found that they have many hidden talents and gifts but what’s more, they have a big heart that earnestly seeks love.

Last but not least, this event went well but more importantly, it would be the experience that made the difference. We lived up to our motive of reaching out to the community and pledge to cater to the needs of the unfortunate. “Ask not what the community can do for you, but what you can do for the community.”

Red blood cells created from IVF embryos

British scientists have created human red blood cells from spare embryonic stem cells, a major breakthrough they claim could soon pave the way for production of synthetic ‘O-negative‘ blood for medical transfusions.

The red blood cells have been produced from stem cells from spare IVF embryos as part of a three-billion-pound project to develop an alternative source of O-negative blood, the universal donor group which can be transfused into people without fear of rejection, ‘The Independent’ reported.

In their research, the scientists used more than a 100 spare embryos left over from treatment at fertility clinics to establish several embryonic stem cell “lines“. A line, RC-7, was transformed into blood stem cells before being converted into red cells containing oxygen-carrying haemoglobin.

Prof Marc Turner, the Director of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service in Edinburgh and leader of the project, said that synthetic blood made on an industrial scale would overcome the problem of blood shortages and risk of transmitting new infections between donors and recipients. “We’ve proved the principle that from these embryonic stem cell lines we can generate red blood cells.

“At the end of this three-year period we would envisage generating up to one unit (a pint) of red cells from embryonic stem cells at clinical grade which fulfil all the in vitro characteristics of red cells,” Prof Turner was quoted as saying.

Stem cell ‘bath’ for cancer ward

Cancer patients in remission at a Suffolk hospital can have their own cells transplanted back to them with the use of a new piece of equipment.

The stem-cell bath defrosts frozen cells taken from people recovering from blood cancers myeloma, leukaemia and lymphoma at Ipswich Hospital.

When transplanted back to the patient following treatment the cells can help their body create new bone marrow.

The bath cuts down on the need for patients to travel to other hospitals.

The stem cells are stored at -190C in liquid nitrogen and can be kept for several years at the national blood transfusion centre in Cambridge.

They are then brought up to body temperature in just two minutes using the bath, the hospital said.

Hermione Warner-Charlick, haematology clinical nurse specialist, said: “The new bath is important because it quickly defrosts the frozen cells to give them back to the patient safely.”

Hi everyone! These are the details for our upcoming event , Know-It-All !

Flow of Event
1: The event comprises 3 rounds;
1.1: Elimination Round: To choose the best 5 groups which will then proceed to the final round. All 3 members of each group will be doing the same paper, which consists of 150 questions. Discussion among group members are allowed, but only one answer sheet will be submitted. Time allocated is 60 minutes.
1.2: Tie breaker: In the event that any ties occur while selecting the best 5 in the elimination round, a tie breaking round will be held in a ‘Rapid Fire’ round form in which all tied groups are required to answer questions in a short period of time. 30 questions would be posed by the Master of Ceremony individually. Each group may ring the buzzer; only 10 seconds are given to answer each question once the buzzer is pressed. Correct answers are awarded 3 marks with one mark deducted for each wrong answer. In the event that no group answers the given question, after 10 seconds, the question is skipped.
1.3: Final: Only the best 5 teams will be competing in the finals in a quiz show form. There will be a total of 90 questions and all contestants in the finals will be required to answer at least 2 questions at the beginning. For every remaining question, contestants will choose a random question number, and will be required to answer it. If contestants are unable to answer it, the question will be opened to the audience, and marks will be rewarded to the particular group. Maximum time allocated for each question is 1 minute, inclusive of asking for help from audiences.
1.4 Cash Pot Round: This event will be opened to everyone except for members of the best 5 groups. RM5 would be awarded for each correctly answered question.
*All questions and given answers are set by the OC (Organising Committee). The OC reserves the right to determine whether or not a question, is given and attempted answer is valid. Decisions made by the OC are final. The OC reserves the right to modify the course of event at any given point without prior notification, if a need (deemed by the OC) arises. The OC also has the right to disallow any group(s) that does not obey the rules, and to disqualify any participant(s) deemed cheating.

3.4: Cash Pot Round: This is open for the audience. Each correctly answered question will be given RM 5. A total of 100 questions will be prepared.

LIFE AS A MEDICAL STUDENT TALK

Held on 20^th of April 2010, from 3 to 5 p.m, the ‘Life as a Medical Student’ was, in all cases, a successful event. The whole of Lecture Theatre 4 was filled to the brim with students interested in knowing what life as a medical student entails. The speakers were Mr. Yukdes from Monash University and Mohd Niza as well as Mohammad Izani from Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences. They elaborated well on what they went through as well as explained the extra-curricular aspects of a medical degree. All the speakers attracted the attention of the students and many questions were put forth by the students, which were well answered by the speakers. The powerpoint pictures also grabbed the attention of students. In the end, the talk fulfilled its purpose of giving the students useful insight to the life of medical students.

‘CAREER PATHWAY & LIFE AS A PHARMACIST’

Not wanting to miss out future pharmaceutical students, the Pre-Med Society also organized a ‘Career Pathway & Life as a Pharmacist’ talk. Held at LT 3 from 3 to 4 p.m on the 29^th of April 2010, Mrs. Wong Hooi Fen, representing Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society, was the invited speaker. With the aid of powerpoint, she explained clearly on the different branches in the field of pharmacy i.e. hospital pharmacist, community pharmacist, pharmacist in manufacturing; the roles of a pharmacist in the society; the programme structure of the course of pharmacy in universities that includes the duration and the topics expected i.e. pharmaceutics, pharmacology, etc; the character & values that a professional pharmacist need to uphold as well as the speaker’s own experiences in this field. There was interaction between the speaker and the students; resulting in everyone being satisfied with the talk. Everyone gained something useful.

EVALUATION ON TRIP TO IMU, BUKIT JALIL CAMPUS

PRE-MEDICAL SOCIETY

Overall Evaluation

- A trip to IMU (International Medical University) was organized by the Pre-Medical Society.

- 5 teachers, 34 members attended, plus 2 excos.

- It was not specified whether the excursion was exclusive to only Pre-Medical members, however all that attended were interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

- Most students were from Cambridge A Levels and a few were from South Australian Metriculation.

- Admission was RM5.

- We took a bus to the destination, and the bus fee was paid for by IMU. Their allowance was RM300.

- A talk was given by a lecturer from IMU.

- A tour was given by 3 students. The group had to split up into 3.

- Refreshments were served.

- The bus took us back to Taylor’s University College, Main Campus.

Problems/weaknesses

Planning stage

- No problems occurred.

During Event

- Bus left 30 minutes late.

- Tour groups returned to the hall late, thus making the bus wait for us for over 30 minutes.

Suggestions to improve

- Ensure that everyone is present at the designated meeting area 10 minutes before the bus arrives.

- Offer a wider range of activities at IMU. For example, to sit in a lecture to see how the lectures are like and interact with more students.

Achievements/milestones

- Attendance was very good; some people had to be rejected due to the lack of space.

- The talk given was very interesting and informative.

- The tour given by the students was definitely very thorough.

What we have learnt

- The various options we can follow through with. (Local, tweening.)

Hi teachers and members! These are the activities that we have done in June:

1) Analysed the Premed Health Survey.
2) Published and evaluated the survey and made recommendations to the college about it.

In July, we plan to:
1) Do a visit to IMU (17 July)
2) Participate in Taylor's Carnival by opening a stall and recruit new members on the 31st July.

BTW, our AGM will be on the 4th of August, from 3 to 4pm at LT7.
Hopefully all of you can come (take note, attendance will be recorded) as we'll be recaping our progress, future events and collecting names for new EXCO posts.

May Update

Hi everyone! The following is our monthly update of our club, for the month of May and June.

In May, we had:

1) Participated in Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) AIDS Memorial Day at Masjid Wilayah KL (17/5/2009)

2) Conducted a charity visit (Kg Sg Kayu Ara Tuition Project) at Damansara (24/5/2009)

3) Published and distributed pamphlets regarding the H1N1 pandemic to Taylor's University College staff and students.

In June, we plan to:

1) Conduct a visit to International Medical University/charity visit (organizing chairperson: Alicia)

2) Organize a charity visit (organizing chairperson: Cheryl)

3) Organize a smoking and asthma health awareness talk (organizing chairperson: Cheryl)

First Aid Workshop Episode 2

Overall Evaluation

21 members attended, plus 5 excos.

Although the member turnout was small, it was preferred by the speaker as the small number gave the opportunity for each participant to do the CPR hands on.

It was opened for any Taylor’s University College students, and held in collaboration with Taylor’s Health Awareness Month in collaboration with ADP’s Science Club and the Leo Club.

Admission was free.

The speaker invited was Mr Murugan Naigu Panditha, the Hon. Secretary of PBSMM Selangor Branch.

The seminar gave exposure to members on first aid skills, mainly on Cardio Pulmanory Resuscitation (CPR) and the recovery position.

Members were given a once in a lifetime chance to do CPR on a CPR dummy.

The speaker taught:

1) CPR - D- danger

- R - response

- A – airway

- B – breathing

- C – circulation

2) The brain can only survive for 4-6 minutes without oxygen

3) The CPR is done for 5 cycles, with 30 Artificial Chest Compressions (ACC) and 2 blows for each cycle.

4) The methods for CPR are different for normal laymen and certified CPR people and doctors.

5) For laymen, no pulse checking is required.

6) The methods of CPR are subject to constant modifications, hence the current method may not be applicable next year.

7) Malaysia’s CPR is based on America’s Heart Association’s CPR.

8) CPR and other first aid skills should be taught to children in primary schools, so that PBSMM’s vision of one house on first aider can be accomplished.

The speaker also gave motivational quotes to further encourage members to pursue their dreams of becoming future doctors.

The speaker, who conducted the seminar for free, was given a token of appreciation sponsored by ECA at the end of the session.

Achievements/milestones

Proceedings of seminar went smoothly.

Seminar was not boring, very interesting, interactive, hands on and very informative.

Members were taught on vital first aid knowledge that may make them as lifesavers one day.

Each member who attended had the chance to perform CPR on a dummy.

What we have learnt

The latest, up-to-date method of conducting CPR.

The recovery position of patients.

The importance of possessing first-aid skills.

Life As A Doctor

As people slowly trickled in at 3pm.

IT'S DR RAO!! :D

As he explains about why one would want to be a doctor.

At the beginning, trying to sort out the slideshow. Dr Rao and Ashveer, Secretary, who organized the talk.

I felt that the Life As A Doctor talk went really well! Okay, admittedly at first it was a little lame, seeing only about 20 people scattered among the lecture theatre. However when the Doctor arrived, many more people began to trickle in as he introduced himself. Eventually the entire lecture theatre was packed and filled to the brim, causing people to sit on the steps! It was a very good turnout, indeed.

Dr Rao, who is an O&G specialist, talked mainly about the reasons of why one would want to be a doctor.

Here are a few that I can remember:

Glamour
Fun
Money
Family's wishes
Friends

Certainly there are a few people who only wanted to be a doctor for one or some of those reasons. He advised them against it, for being a doctor isn't all about that. "You only get some money after 10 years or something," he said. He's a funny man; something he said that caused us to laugh was "I make my MO's work very hard, giving them a lot of work to do so that I can go home and watch a movie."

He went on to talk to us about University - from the first year to the fifth year and what happens after that. He shared with us some personal experiences that happened to him while he was studying medicine in India, making us realise all the more how stressful undertaking medicine can really be.

A few points that he mentioned that could make first year university in another country was:

Food - you would have to adjust to their eating habits
Extreme climates - you may not be adjusted to very cold temperatures. (Heat doesn't matter since we already live in Malaysia and it's so super hot these days anyway.)
Friends - living alone in another country where you have no friends or family may be really hard. Having support is very important if you are to strive in Uni.

... And I can't fully remember the rest, but they were all equally important! A tip that he gave us all was that you really have to ensure the university you go to is recognized by MMC. For if it isn't, then you will not be able to work in Malaysia even if you have a MBBS. He then proceeded to talk about the difference between American and Commonwealth medical systems. In American, they use problem-based learning, where they learn by the problems they encounter provided by actual patients.

He explained a lot about specializing and housemanship and patient care and how that was important. The day ended with a Q&A session which was interesting and informative. Some questions asked where about specializing after your degree and drug dispension.

A souvenior was presented to Dr Rao and refreshments were served at the end.

EVALUATION REPORT ON VISIT TO INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY , BUKIT JALIL CAMPUS

The IMU visit trip group are welcome by a talk host by Dr. Gan .

Members are then divided into groups , and the staff in blue are explaining roughly
regarding the theory class .

The staff is giving some explanation regarding practical class .

Members were happily enjoying the refreshment prepared by IMU .

Overall Evaluation
- A visit to International Medical University(IMU) , Bukit Jalil Campus was organized by

pre-medical society.
- There are 34 attendees ,1 committee member , 1 teacher advisor and 4 Taylor’s councillor .
- Bus provided by International Medical University was arranged to the destination.
- There is 3 campus tour lead by the person in charge, Ms Ooi Su Yin , Senior Marketing

- There is a short tea break in IMU for the members.
- There is a short talk about the criteria and information for entering IMU.
- Interesting experience shared by IMU lecturer.
- 4 of the Taylor’s counsellors, Mr Ian Chia , Ms Nazihah and Ms. Siti joined the visit to IMU

with our group.

Problems/weaknesses
Planning stage
- Long period of waiting time for the reply from International Medical University.
- Registration from students.

During Event
- Delay of time due to long travel distance.
- Delay of time due to traffic jam.
- Delay of time due to marking the attendance.

Suggestions to improve
- To confirm with the person in charge more early before the event.
- Advertising the event through members to their friends.
- Post up posters earlier to seek for attendees.
- Travel half an hour earlier to the destination including time taken for marking the

member’s attendance.

Achievements/milestones
- Have a good relationship amongst member of Pre-Medical Society.
- Have a good relationship with the person in charge of International Medical University.
- Have a better understanding of being a doctor in terms of mentality, spirituality and

physicality.
- Have a better understanding of the criteria for being a doctor in many aspects.

What we have learnt
- Working as a doctor needs passion as well as communication skills.
- Learn a lot to communicate amongst member.

- Interacting with the orphan to know more about them.
- Have a good relationship with the person in charge and the orphan.
- Entertaining the orphans with games .
- Hamper was sponsored as a gift for the orphans .

What we have learnt
- Share our time to company and communicate with the kids.
- Learn a lot to care about the others.
- Willingly help the others that need help.
- Understand the responsibility for being part of the community .

- A first aid training seminar organized by the Pre-Medical Society.
- 19 members attended, plus 3 excos.
- It was exclusive for Pre-Medical Society members only.
- Admission was free.
- The speaker invited was Mr Murugan Naigu Panditha, the Hon. Secretary of PBSMM Selangor Branch.
- He had previously been very active in PBSMM, having been sent to countries such as Pakistan and Acheh to do relief and humanitarian works.
- He had previously been awarded the prestigious Tokoh Maulidur Rasul Award in the year 2006 and Young Humanitarian Award in 2007.

Overall Evaluation

- 35 copies of “LIFE OF A DOCTOR” were sold at cost price (RM 15)
- A total of 104 students and parents/visitors attended the event..
- Event was very well chaired by Ms. Lavnya Balenderan. (VP of society)
- A euthanasia video by 0801PM1 (CAL) was shown to let students ponder about medical ethics.
-Speaker shared about his personal experiences while in medical school, a junior doctor and a specialist. (work life, personal views, and quotes from other doctors).
- Students and parents responded very well in Q&A session.
- A souvenir was given to the speaker.

Achievements/ milestones
- The session was very interactive and informative.
- Overall, all students and visitors agreed that the talk gave a different perspective about the life of a doctor and a medical student.

What we have learnt
- Students and visitors now have a deeper understanding of the medical ethics, medicine as a career, the life of a doctor (career, income, personal life), and the life of a medical student ( subjects studied during MBBS and further post grad – specializing ).

Overall Evaluation
- A visit to Rumah Kanak-Kanak Impian was organized by pre-medical society.
- There are 11 attendees and 2 committee members.
- 3 student’s car were arranged to the destination.
- Items that were brought:( 1 ) 16 packs of chicken rice for the orphan.( 2 ) Cardboard,stationary for decoration.

Achievements/milestones
- Work together with the orphan to decorate a cardboard as their gift.
- Have a good relationship with the person in charge and the orphan.
- One of the members donated some old clothes and doll to the orphanage.

What we have learnt
- Share their time to company and communicate the kids.
- Learn a lot to care about the others.
- Willingly to help the others that needs help.

- The session was very interactive and informative. Overall, the members agreed that the talk gave a different perspective on the issue AIDS.
- The attendance, although did not achieve the target of 90 people, still was overwhelming as 62 members attended the talk.

What we have learnt
- The members are now fully equipped with knowledge on the medical background of AIDS/HIVS.
- Members are aware of the issues surrounding the topic such as the stigma, statistics of AIDS/HIV in Malaysia, as well as the policies on AIDS.
- Members are now aware of their roles as future doctors in aiding the AIDS patients.

- The feedback from the speaker was positive as he offered anyone of us who wanted to be trained as speakers or facilitators in the future.
- These volunteers will be taking part in the International AIDS Memorial Day 2008

What we have learnt
- The volunteers are now fully equip with knowledge on the medical background of AIDS/HIV as well as are aware of the issues surrounding the topic such as the stigma and efforts made by the Malaysian AIDS Council.
- Volunteers now understand the importance of giving commitment in this volunteering work.

The event was really interactive as the speaker was very very good and interesting. We had an ice-breakking session which was very interesting as he popped up questions that never did come up to our mind before this. The session was easy to understand as the speaker, Abang Zam, approached the topic of AIDS/HIV is a simple was as do students would find it easy to absorb. ALOT of questions were given, (a proof of how much we dont know about the topic) and ALOT of misconceptions were answered.

As you all can see, Pre-Med has lined up many events this year. The next one is yet another event under the Malaysian AIDS Council. (MAC)
This time around, The Malaysian AIDS Council have calloborated with Durex to organize a safe sex talk right here in Taylor 's College.
They are targetting a huge sum of 300 students in one day, with 3 sessions in mind.
Details of the talk is still in plan, and i will inform as soon as i get the informations. (date etc)
This is however the exciting part... If you would like to take part in the talk as a FACILITATOR, that is helping to organize the talk and handling the day of the event....

This is Hani Zakaria, the secretary of of the Pre-Medical Society. I would like to report that the last event, the trip to The International AIDS Memorial Day 2008 was a huge success. The Malaysian Aids Council (MAC) was really happy with having some of our members as volunteers. Hi Hani,
MAC Facilitators Club (MFC) is under Training Division which means I am responsible for it. This is to enable MAC to manage volunteer efficiently. We will have regular gatherings and programmes.

MFC is formed :
a) to manage Training Divisions volunteer better
b) to train MAC future resource person
c) to support MAC-Youth wing
d) to support workplace programme

Membership of MFC will not only come from college students but from young working adults as well. When I conduct the workplace programme, quite a number express their interest. I'm looking for more long term relationship as i want to build members to support MAC.

There will be certain criteria to MFC and one of it is by invitation only. We need to screen the membership as I want all members to have at least facilitation skills and not any tom, dick anf harry can be a facilitator.

What we'll do is that we have a meeting and I can xplain MAC and MFC. After the meeting, those who are interested will go through a screening process so that we can be sure that they can become a facilitator. I'll decide on the screenings and we can do it together.

The International AIDS Memorial Day 2008 was successfully organized by the Malaysian AIDS Council. It was held on the 31st of May, from 6pm to 10.30pm at the One Utama Shopping Complex's New Wing's main entrance. 36 of Pre-Medical Society members volunteered for the event and let me spare you all from any long report on what happened on the day of the event. To one and all,

On behalf of the committee members of the Pre-Med Society, I'd like to profess our DEEPEST APOLOGIES for postponing this Sunday's talk "Life As A Doctor" by Dr. Ong Hean Teik. Unfortunately, a family member of Dr. Ong's passed away recently, and not only that, Dr. Ong's wife was involved in an accident late last night.

We hope you understand the reasons for postponing this event. We also wish we could have known early enough to inform everyone during yesterday's general meeting. However the news only reached us this morning. Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

However, we would also hope that you could do us a favour by spreading this by word of mouth to make sure it reaches everyone's ears.

Do spread this to all your classmates, friends, members of the Pre-Med Society (just in case they do not check their email!), people you know who are interested/will be attending this Sunday's talk, and just about anyone. We would really appreciate it.

In view of the last minute postponement, the revised date will be confirmed later on, but will most probably be settled to a date convenient in mid-July after every course (CAL, SAM, ICPU) has completed their exams.

Once again, we hope you understand and will help us inform everyone.

How well do you know AIDS?

In conjunction with the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day (which is still in the planning stage..) we have invited another distinguished speaker to talk to us about an issue that is becoming increasingly important for Malaysians to increase their knowledge about.. AIDS.

So, bring your friends and whoever you think might benefit from this (including yourself!) for an hour long session next week to not only learn about the biological aspects of HIV/AIDS, but as well as the polices and issues surrounding it. This is clearly an event that cannot be missed, because we have invited the Honorary Secretary of the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) Executive Committee, Prof. Madya Dr. Rusli Ismail, to take time off from his busy schedule to educate us.

A New Beginning

It felt like yesterday when that the Pre Med Society Committee of 2007/08 was just formed.Now a year later,we are still strong though some of our members mainly SAM students have went on to pursue their dreams.

Anyway,2008 is a new year and this means a new beginning for the Pre Med Society of Taylors University College.It will also be the year where there will be a new committee will be formed for the year 2008/09.

We will be looking forward for ECA day and our first AGM of the year(last for us old committee... =***[ lol)

Blood Donation Drive

Hey I know this is really really kinda old but as we BOD of Premed,we are really busy this few months as all of us are preparing for our AS finals as well as our treasurer is preparing for her SAM trials.Anyway this is what I will post about.

On th 7th and 8th of August,we,Pre Med Society organized a blood donation drive from 9.30am to 4 pm.It was at the Staff Lounge(the room at the cafeteria for your info).At first we thought none of the students in Taylors will donate their blood.However surprisingly many step forward to donate.

I thank all of you guys and girls who came and support this campaign.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis patients do this everyday,waiting with full of hope for a cure.

Two weeks ago there was a exhibition and talk on Multi Sclerosis by Bayer Malaysia held in our campus.The speaker was Dr. H.T. Chong from University Malaya Medical Centre(UMMC).He was enlightening us on what Multi Sclerosis,symptoms and this disease situation in Malaysia.However not all classes were invited to LT2 for this talk so let me touch a bit on Multi Sclerosis and its symptoms:

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.

In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.

Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.

People with MS can expect one of four clinical courses of disease, each of which might be mild, moderate, or severe.

MS is a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease that affects the central nervous system.

MS is not contagious and is not directly inherited.

Most people with MS have a normal or near-normal life expectancy.

The majority of people with MS do not become severely disabled.

There are now FDA-approved medications that have been shown to "modify" or slow down the underlying course of MS.

Relapsing-Remitting
Characteristics: People with this type of MS experience clearly defined flare-ups (also called relapses, attacks, or exacerbations). These are episodes of acute worsening of neurologic function. They are followed by partial or complete recovery periods (remissions) free of disease progression.
Frequency: Most common form of MS at time of initial diagnosis. Approximately 85%.

Primary-Progressive
Characteristics: People with this type of MS experience a slow but nearly continuous worsening of their disease from the onset, with no distinct relapses or remissions. However, there are variations in rates of progression over time, occasional plateaus, and temporary minor improvements.
Frequency: Relatively rare. Approximately 10%.

Secondary-Progressive
Characteristics: People with this type of MS experience an initial period of relapsing-remitting MS, followed by a steadily worsening disease course with or without occasional flare-ups, minor recoveries (remissions), or plateaus.
Frequency: 50% of people with relapsing-remitting MS developed this form of the disease within 10 years of their initial diagnosis, before introduction of the "disease-modifying" drugs. Long-term data are not yet available to demonstrate if this is significantly delayed by treatment.

Progressive-Relapsing
Characteristics: People with this type of MS experience a steadily worsening disease from the onset but also have clear acute relapses (attacks or exacerbations), with or without recovery. In contrast to relapsing-remitting MS, the periods between relapses are characterized by continuing disease progression.
Frequency: Relatively rare. Approximately 5%.

For now there is no cure for Multiple Sclerosis just drugs to suppress its effects.

New semester,New Happenings

Actually it has been quite a while since Pre Med Society has organize any events.So for this semester we have many new events lined up just for you guys and gals out there in Taylors.

First up is ECA day.ECA actually stands for Extra Curricular Activities.For this sem,there is going to be another ECA day.However until today we at Pre Med Society do not know whether this ECA day is going to be a small one like in first semester where everyone just register their names in various clubs and societies or it is going to be done in a large scale where there will be some great events organized by our college lined up specially for us.As I write,this matter is still undecided yet by the management of our college.Whatever the outcome we are planning to have a charity booth to raise funds for HOSPIS Malaysia.So we hope you guys and gals can come to our booth and donate some money to support HOSPIS Malaysia's good cause.(If you people aren't sure of what HOSPIS Malaysia does refer to the last post below for more info).Anyway there will be flyers put up by our society before this event to let all of you know.

Next up is an event which will invovle HOSPIS Malaysia.There will either be a talk by HOSPIS Malaysia's representative or we will organize a community service trip to their charity home.Details will be posted ASAP once our president Colin has confirmed it with their General Manager.

There will also be a blood drive campaign happening soon.Again Colin will have to confirm with Miss Shirley about this matter.Also there might be another talk but details of this talk will be confirm ASAP.

Finally there will be another AGM meeting with you guys most likely next week Tuesday from 3.00-3.30pm.Details of this also happen to be not confirmed yet as there is difficulty in booking the lecture hall for this.In this meeting,we will once again brief all of you guys and gals on the events I wrote earlier.

Once everything is settled,I will once again post all the details on this blog.So keep an eye for newer post!I really apologize on behalf of Pre Med Society for all this "not confirmed yet" stuff that I have written.Really since the second semester we,the board members have been very busy with our studies as well as trying to plan events for you guys.Really sorry .... =*[

Semester 2

Semester 2. second half of year 2007.

So far, we have three interesting events lined up.

1) Hospis Malaysia
2) Blood Donation Drive
3) ECA day.

I'll briefly describe each event.

Hospis Malaysia, this is a voluntary organization helping those who are seriously ill, or near death. I honestly feel, alot of us pre medical students are very stuck up on saving lives only. but there are of course certain aspects of medicine, where doctors cant do anything anymore. the best is to provide the best quality of life to our future patients. this is where palliative care comes in. We'd help this people who really need all the support that they can get. Currently we are unsure of the number of people into this program. but i plan this to be a weekend thing where we go in groups. so they get constant help and of course some of you guys would be busy during the weekends, so it makes it very flexible.

Blood donation drive, is just a blood donation drive. cannot elaborate much yet.

ECA DAY, as rachel is planning this up, there is gonna be a fund raising, for a certain charity group. and as well as getting people registered.

Oh yeah and i forgot 17 July 2007 (date is 99.9% finalized) , there is a womans health talk going on, ladies its your chance to win free goodies, and learn more on improving your health etc. conducted by the gynecologists society of malaysia.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. Just be free on that day guys, and i will post up the venue and time very soon.

IMU Trip

The pre-medical society of Taylors has had its first trip today to International Medical University Campus situated in Bukit Jalil, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive away from Taylors College Main Campus.

The bus departed the main campus at approximately 1545, and arrived at IMU around 1610. Upon reaching we were greeted by the marketing department, and lead us to a discussion room where we had a medical talk presented by professor Ong, which was one of the first few Lecture's that established IMU 15 years ago, better known then as IMC, International Medical College.

Professor Ong, first outlined certain aspects of being a doctor, much of it being having the passion, commitment, and understanding the satisfaction of being a doctor. After such, he told us the curriculum of IMU, having a very strong educational philosophy in relevant skills and analytical thinking, and stating, even though in the first year, students will come in contact with real life patients, as part of their Problem Based Learning style which is the modern approach to teaching Medicine around the world now.

After an excellent presentation and answer and question session, we were lead in groups of 10 to tour around the IMU campus. Needless to say they're very well equipped, with huge lecture theaters, labs (for pharmaceutical students), student lounge, gym and Wireless Internet Access all around campus.

Needless to say, this post wouldn't be half as interesting if there weren't any pictures:

The tour ended with a small photo taking session in the atrium, sorta the centre portion of the campus, but i still wonder why they call it an atria? isnt that the upper chambers of the heart? well beats me.

We left back for TCSJ around 6, beat the traffic and got back at 630.

A big shout out to all the board members that were involved in helping me plan this trip, thank you IMU for allowing us to tour your campus, and most importantly the members of PMS that participated.

FYI: PMS wont be having any meeting till after the CAL holiday, this is mainly because the board is mostly from CAL and it'd be hard to get CAL students back to college during their holidays. Please keep coming back as any upcoming activities will be announced here before meetings.

Oh yeah, for students interested in HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP!!! You can contact the main campus head office, especially for CAL students they'll be having two rounds, one during the first week of the holidays and another during the 2nd week of the holidays. Hope to see you guys during the internship. Im sorry for SAM students, but i think you guys should just head over to the main office to check it out.

Dear members, as stated in the last PMS meeting, the society will be organizing a trip to IMU (International Medical University) in Bukit Jalil.

The trip will benefit our society by showing us around a full working medical university, chance to meet up with students, lecturers and counsellors.

Those whom are interested, please leave a comment with your name, contact number and/or email, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. The deadline to book your place on the bus is 18-5-07.

As of the bus fare, it will fully paid, or only a small sum is needed.
